Chembe, Malawi

Afrobeat crackles through busted speakers, women shared hushed words over dirty dishes, and children explode into laughter on the beach. Canoes, laden with nets and hooks and smoking men, drift towards the horizon. In the morning we rise with the songbirds and drink coffee on the porch; at night, we play cards and sip beer beneath a watchful fruit bat. Our busy minds find stillness at the bottom of the lake, suspended in a kaleidoscope of fish. Life here doesn’t rush, it flows.
